Young Star House is an official training partner for Safe Management Group in the Northwestern Region. Safe Management is a 1 or 2 day training program for adults involved in managing potentially aggressive clients. This may include adults working within social services, education, public health or otherwise where called upon to manage the behaviour of youth.  The training focuses on various de-escalating strategies and behaviour management techniques. Additionally, the program teaches physical intervention techniques that are designed to reduce harm for both the staff person and the client. Like CPI and PMAB, Safe Management is authorized by the Ministry of Child and Youth Services as recognized and approved training for adults working with youth in Ontario. Safe Management’s Crisis Intervention Program empowers your team with the skills necessary to effectively manage risk and competently de-escalate an individual. We offer online, classroom and train-the-trainer methods for our Crisis Intervention Training Program.

Our Crisis Intervention Program covers the following;

Risk Management - this includes identifying two types of behavioural crises – “Predictable” versus “Unpredictable” crises; the different types of risks, including those to the home, special care environments and agencies; and the four ways to prevent behavioural crisis through Preparation - Environmental Assessment and Management; Agency Preparation of Policies, Procedures, and Program Monitoring Processes; Preventative Behavioural Programming; and Developing and Monitoring Intrusive Program Plans. We identify the principles and compatibility of our Crisis  Intervention Program with Trauma Informed Care and the Recovery Model.

Relationship Management is a critical element in the creation and management of safe environments. In many instances, outbursts occur because the client is reacting to some aspect of the quality of his/her relationships with others. Your personal interaction with the client can determine the outcome of such situations by the way you react to unexpected crises and can help plan your reactions to predictable crises.

This section describes seven basic principles of Relationship Management with associated techniques of intervention. These principles are effective strategies for managing various relationships: clients, colleagues, professionals and family members. Examples are given based on a verbal client. For nonverbal clients or clients with limited social motivation and interactive skills, many of these principles may not directly apply. The principles must also be reinterpreted within the context of the client’s particular developmental level and processing characteristics. For some clients this may involve a more concrete design of the strategy.

Behaviour Management - There are many important questions to answer when planning preventively. This section provides you with a systematic set of questions to answer and issues to address in a worksheet format to help in this planning.  Knowing how the client learns best, how the client uniquely communicates his/her wants and needs and how the client expresses his/her aggressive behaviour in response to specific triggers, are one group of such questions. Knowing early non-aggressive warning signs and developing specific ideas about how to intervene are critical.

This section will provide a “Behavioural Profile” worksheet that includes many types of information that is typically gathered for what is called a “Behavioural Assessment”, especially when it is focused on developing program intervention plans.

Aggression Management - Aggression usually does not just happen suddenly and without warning. Aggression often occurs over time and through different phases. This section of the program describes how to assess this development in terms of four phases (subtle changes, escalating, imminent, and physical aggression) in three response domains (verbal, physiological, and gross motor) and how to incorporate the findings into an understandable “Escalation Continuum.”  In addition, the staff’s best response to each phase is captured in the “Staff Response Continuum.”  Recommendations for how to respond to different phases of the Aggression Escalation Continuum are given, including when, and if, to physically intervene.

Physical Intervention Concepts - This section provides preliminary information relevant to learning the Safe Management Group’s Physical Intervention Techniques. We review MCSS requirements for training and implementing emergency physical interventions as a set of quality control guidelines that can be useful to consider in all settings. Next, we describe Safe Management Group’s teaching approach; the Individual Specialized Consultation process that enables individualized physical interventions, our team approach, and how physical intervention based on bio-mechanical technology is integrated into the Safe Management Group’s curriculum. Finally, we provide checklists of information that are important for guaranteeing safety for the individuals and trainees learning Safe Management Group’s Physical Intervention Techniques.
